What to Expect at Your Child’s First Dance Class at Petite Ballet
It’s your dancer’s first day of ballet class! Whether your child is excited, a little nervous, or somewhere in between, knowing what to expect can make that first visit feel easier for everyone.
Petite Ballet offers ballet and creative movement classes for children ages 1.5 through 8 at Beam & Barre in Cos Cob, Greenwich, CT. Our classes are designed to make young dancers feel welcome, comfortable, and excited about being in the dance studio.
Arriving at Petite Ballet
When you enter Beam & Barre, located at 241 E Putnam Ave, Cos Cob, CT 06807, walk toward the back of the store, where you’ll see a sign for Petite Ballet.
Need to get your dancer ready? Changing rooms are conveniently located on the main floor of Beam & Barre.
If your dancer is already dressed for class, head downstairs to the Petite Ballet waiting area. Families can take a seat and relax, use the restroom, or read a book together before class begins.
We recommend arriving with enough time to get settled without feeling rushed. For our littlest dancers especially, having a few minutes to become comfortable in a new environment can help make the transition into class easier.
What Happens When Class Begins?
When it’s time to dance, students will be welcomed into the studio by their Petite Ballet teacher.
Our teachers understand that entering a dance class independently can be a big milestone for toddlers and preschoolers. We work to create a warm, positive transition into the studio so children can begin building confidence and independence at their own pace.
Once inside, dancers participate in an age-appropriate class filled with ballet foundations, creative movement, music, imaginative play, and plenty of encouragement.
Do Parents Stay During Ballet Class?
For our independent ballet classes, parents and caregivers do not enter the dance studio during class. You are welcome to wait in the Petite Ballet lobby or leave and return a few minutes before class ends for pickup.
The exception is Grown Up & Me, our ballet class for children ages 1.5 to 3. A parent or caregiver participates in the entire class and gets to dance right alongside their child.
What If My Child Is Nervous About Their First Class?
That’s completely normal, especially for young children experiencing their first independent activity.
Our Petite Ballet classes are designed around the emotional, social, and physical development of young children. The goal of a first class isn’t perfection. It’s helping your dancer begin to feel comfortable in the studio, connect with their teacher, explore movement, and discover that dance can be fun.
Some children run into their first class without looking back. Others need a little more time. Both are part of learning and growing.
Before you know it, your dancer may be the one leading you down the stairs because they know exactly where ballet class is!
